Is Gout Painful?

The medical condition that is referred to as gout typically occurs as a result of excess uric acid levels in the blood. This can happen for a variety of reasons including genetic factors, metabolic disorders, or it may develop from a diet that is rich in purines. Foods that fall into this category can consist of  shellfish, red meat, and excess alcohol. The symptoms that many patients experience can include severe pain and discomfort in the joints of the big toe, as well as swelling, and tenderness. A proper diagnosis can be determined by extracting a small amount of fluid from the affected joint. This can also help to determine the severity of the condition. There are measures that can be implemented to help to prevent gout, which include eating a healthy diet that is rich in vegetables, and limiting red meat and alcohol. If you are experiencing symptoms of gout, please consult with a podiatrist who can help you to manage the pain and properly treat this condition.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Florida Foot & Ankle Group, P.A.. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

Methods That May Help to Prevent Falling

Research has indicated that falling is a common occurrence among seniors in the United States. Many elderly people may avoid participating in certain activities as a result of a fear of falling. There are measures that can be implemented which may reduce the risk of falling. These can include removing any clutter from the main living areas in the home, improving lighting conditions, and removing any loose carpeting. Additionally, it is generally beneficial to install grab bars in the shower and toilet area, as this can be helpful in preventing falling. It is important to wear shoes that fit correctly to aid in preventing unnecessary tripping. Many elderly people can reduce the risk of falling when walkers are used and slowing down is beneficial while performing daily activities. If you would like additional information about how to prevent falling, it is suggested to speak with a podiatrist.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our podiatrists from Florida Foot & Ankle Group, P.A.. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Pain and discomfort that is felt on the ball of the foot may indicate the presence of a condition that is known as Morton’s neuroma. Additionally, the pain may be felt at the base of the toes, and patients have noticed that it feels like they are standing on pebbles. Other symptoms can include numbness or tingling, and walking may be difficult. A common cause of this condition is wearing shoes that are too tight, and which do not have adequate room for the toes to move freely in. Wearing these types of shoes can cause irritation in the nerve, gradually putting pressure on that portion of the foot. There are existing medical conditions that are often associated with Morton’s neuroma. These can include bunions, hammertoes, and flat feet. After a proper diagnosis is performed, mild relief can be found in performing stretching techniques that may be helpful in loosening the tendons, in addition to elevating and massaging the affected foot. Please consult with a podiatrist if you feel you may have developed Morton’s neuroma, so that the proper treatment can begin.

Morton's neuroma is a painful foot condition that commonly affects the areas between the second and third or third and fourth toe, although other areas of the foot are also susceptible. Morton’s neuroma is caused by an inflamed nerve in the foot that is being squeezed and aggravated by surrounding bones.

What Increases the Chances of Having Morton’s Neuroma?

  • Ill-fitting high heels or shoes that add pressure to the toe or foot
  • Jogging, running or any sport that involves constant impact to the foot
  • Flat feet, bunions, and any other foot deformities

Morton’s neuroma is a very treatable condition. Orthotics and shoe inserts can often be used to alleviate the pain on the forefront of the feet. In more severe cases, corticosteroids can also be prescribed. In order to figure out the best treatment for your neuroma, it’s recommended to seek the care of a podiatrist who can diagnose your condition and provide different treatment options.

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

A broken toe can occur if something heavy is dropped on it, or if you stub it by hitting it against a piece of furniture. Common symptoms that are often associated with this condition can include bruising near and around the affected toe, and there may also be difficulty in walking and putting weight on it. If the toe appears to be bent at an awkward angle, it may be dislocated, and immediate medical attention should be sought. It may also look swollen, and it may be hard to move. After a proper diagnosis is performed, which typically consists of having an X-ray taken, the correct treatment can begin. Many patients find it beneficial to use the method that is known as buddy taping. This is accomplished by taping the injured toe to the toe next to it. This method may be helpful in providing adequate support as the healing process begins. If the fracture is severe enough, then surgery may be necessary to repair the injured toe. If you think you may have broken your toe, it is suggested that you speak to a podiatrist who can offer the correct treatment options.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Florida Foot & Ankle Group, P.A.. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.
