Why Am I Experiencing Pain in My Heel?

If you experience pain in your heel once you take the first few steps after a period of rest or sleep, you may have plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common forms of heel pain. It occurs when the long ligament on the bottom of your feet (the plantar fascia) that connects your heel with your toes becomes overly stressed, torn, or otherwise damaged. The pain may be stabbing or throbbing and the area may be inflamed. Plantar fasciitis may even be linked or occur in tandem with heel spurs—which are bony growths that form where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel bone. If you have pain in your heel that tends to be worse after periods of rest, make an appointment with a podiatrist for a full examination, diagnosis, and treatment.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Florida Foot & Ankle Group, P.A.. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Foot pain is a common ailment among many patients, and there are several reasons why this can occur. Foot sprains can cause severe pain and discomfort, and can happen as a result of tearing or overstretching the ligaments. Plantar fasciitis affects the heel and arch of the foot, and it can cause difficulty walking and completing daily activities. Some patients experience tarsal tunnel syndrome, and symptoms of this condition can consist of a tingling or numbing sensation in the bottom of the foot. Charcot arthropathy of the foot can cause the bones in the foot and ankle to weaken. Any type of foot pain requires a consultation with a podiatrist, who can effectively diagnose and treat your pain.

What Can Cause Hammertoe?

Hammertoe is a deformity of one or more of the little toes in which the toe is bent downward at the middle joint, creating a hammer-like shape. This condition can be painful, make your toe joints stiff, swollen and rigid, and lead to corns, calluses, and inflammation on the affected toe. Hammertoe is thought to be caused by frequently wearing ill-fitting shoes. These are shoes that may be too tight or too narrow in the toe area, as well as shoes with excessively high heels, which push the toes forward and into an unnatural position. Shoes are not the only potential cause of hammertoe, however. Various anatomical problems, bunions, MTP joint instability, and prior trauma to the toe can all make a hammertoe more likely. If you have hammertoe, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist to find the right treatment for you.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists from Florida Foot & Ankle Group, P.A.. Our doctors will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

How Obesity Affects a Child’s Feet

The arch of the foot is primarily responsible for absorbing and dispersing reaction forces that feet encounter during normal activities. When ligaments which support the arch are subject to prolonged, excessive loading from obesity, they can become overly stretched, damaged, and painful. Children who are obese may be more prone to foot pain and flat feet due to increased levels of pressure put on the soles of the feet. This, in turn, may restrict their ability to participate in physical activity. If your child is obese and is experiencing pain in their feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who may prescribe custom orthotics to help improve foot alignment, decrease pain and improve overall mobility.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact one of our podiatrists of Florida Foot & Ankle Group, P.A.. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Debary, Lake Mary, Orlando, and Oviedo, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.
